Camp NaNo Update #1

9:52 AM

I promised you this was coming, didn't I?

Camp is...happening.

Look, it's me.
I'm writing a sci-fi retelling of Homer's The Iliad. It's brutal and bloody and space-y and I'm enjoying myself, even though I'm screwing it up royally already. Isn't that just how Camp always goes? I'm working on letting myself suck and enjoying it along the way. (Hah.)

On Saturday I wrote 15K with Katie. DO YOU GUYS REALIZE HOW MANY WORDS THAT IS. I died. Several times. I'm still not sure how it happened.

My current word count: 36470

Space battles are happening. Angst is happening. Sci-fi armor is happening. I love it so much, you guys.

How is Camp NaNo going for you?

  1. It's going pretty slow. Writing is tiring when all you want to do is watch Arrow.

  2. NaNo is going well for me! My wrists hurt from the pitiful 35k that I've written over the past two weeks. I can't even imagine the excruciating feelings that your wrists feel after THAT MUCH IN SO LITTLE TIME. Awesome jobbbbb!

  4. 15K IN ONE DAY? That is my all-time high for a month! So, yeah, I know very well that that is a lot of words! I just have to write slowly to develop my thoughts fully. With a sprinkle of good fortune it will pay off in the end. I'm so glad you're enjoying yourself! I'm giving this crazy camp of productivity a shot in July :D

    1. I would not recommend it -- it's the worst. My wrists still haven't recovered.

  6. Yayyyy for 36K! And YAYYYYY for a 15K day! THAT IS AMAZING. And once you've done it once, mwhahah, it'll be easier the next time. ;D
(And I'm pretty sure NaNos are for messing up what should be glorious ideas, right?! And then edits come later. After, like, 9 years of sleep and so much chocolate.)

    1. I want to say there won't be a next time, but we all know I'm stupidly reckless and will do it again soon. *sigh*

  7. The most I've written in a day is 12k. So I applaud you and Katie for completing 15k in a day. I warred with her a bit that day and I'm surprised she didn't die on me xD

Uhm, it's going? Dark and twisted sci-fi is happening but I feel like the darkishness of it is thrown off by how my main character narrates. They're so rebellious sometimes, gosh. Like, CAN YOU NOT.

  8. 15k in one day is INSANE. *humble applause*
By the way, I love, love, LOVE your novel idea. Sci-fi retellings of mythology?? Ugh, my brain is going off in dangerous, plot-bunny territory.
Keep up the awesome work, I can't wait to see where this story goes!

  9. Congratulations on your 15k day, to both of you. Those things are so tough! Keep up the awesome work. Haha, yep, that's pretty much the purpose of Camp NaNo. Write a lot very badly and destroy your good ideas so you can edit them into something that resembles a book later. My Camp is up and down. Some days are good, and some days I don't want to write anything. But progress has been made, and I"m on track to finish my book this month, so that's good, right?

    1. I love Camp so I keep doing it, and I always think I'll regret it, but I don't quite, and it's just this endless death spiral of hurt wrists and dead brain. But I regret nothing.

  16. I told myself that I would do Camp this year. yeah that didn't work out as well as I thought it would. I didn't write for like days and then I just gave up. I'm going to try again next time (which I'm pretty sure is in July (?)) and hopefully accomplish something. Also, 36k is AMAZING. Great job Aimee! :D

  17. You're insane. We're both kind of insane. I'm still recovering from that day but it was fun and made me feel accomplished, so... yay? xD

  18. So excited for this story!! ^_^ LIKE SERIOUSLY.

As for me, I'm making progress with my NaNo project (novella first draft), but not in the way I wanted to, I guess? I was basically stuck for two weeks and words were not cooperating with me. AT ALL. Now I'm finally feeling inspired, and the story is flowing, but I've been too busy this week to keep up with my creativity. *slowly shakes head at the universe's irony*

In other news, I have officially read through and commented on, like, the last two months of your blog posts. *nervous laughter* So, I'm finally caught up on all your happenings. Look at me go. *gives self a high-five*
